Here are youtube links to watch!
Whenever I think of Native Americans, I think of finely crafted jewelry made of from elements and materials like silver, leather, turquoise, and colorful pearls or stones. I thought it would be fun to see a large display of jewelry at once, so I chose a video. I chose this video because it provides background information about the jewelry, and the viewer learns that it is still worn and sought after today. It is relevant to our class because it gives us insight to how the Navajo's are maintaining their culture and history now through jewelry making.
I thought it would be fun to hear a story told by a Native American, in this case a Cherokee Indian, since they had such a long oral tradition. I liked the wooden flute music playing in the background, which tied back to the recordings we listened to in class. I found it interesting that the rabbit and fox are both personified, much like how Native American music tries to relate to animals and nature.
Because we focused on sub-Saharan music, I thought I would be interesting to watch a Pygmy tribe making music and dancing. I've always thought African dance was beautiful, and I am glad that I found this video. The children in the video are very sweet! I think that the dance is very energetic and exciting, and much of this has to do with the fast rhythm of the shakers and lively singing.

The Pygmy music was motivating, and they only used a guitar, shaker, and voice! It was interesting to see all ages involved. I noticed some call and response in the singing. The percussion section included the shaker and several guys and a woman clapping their hands in the back. Energetic music can be made with so few instruments!
ReplyDeleteHey Sarah!!! Loved the Pygmy music it's soo uplifting. I read on that page that the Pygmy tribe is the oldest tribe in African. I wonder if that's true? The little boy, the one closest to the front, is just too cute!
ReplyDeleteI really like the jewelry posting, and the story is cool, too.
ReplyDeleteThe last video is really interesting. On the one hand, I can hear aspects of traditional "pygmy" music, but on the other, they're using a modern guitar! We'll be hitting this sort of stuff in class tomorrow (the "BaAka")--you might want to come back and watch the video after our discussion.
First off, I would like to say cute pic. That is adorable. You should put that up on your fb profile pic sometime or something.. haha!
ReplyDeleteSecond, I like the Pygmy Dance and Song. It sounds a lot like Caribbean music or Jamaican music. I mean, I guess that would make sense because Africans were there ancestors.. but yea
That was cool~
I love storytelling! That is so much fun! One things that I've always loved about the Native American culture is how they use stories and nature to explain what is happening in the world around them!
ReplyDeleteThe jewelry is beautiful. You are right. The turquoise and leather and jewelry is something we always think of when we think of Native American culture. However, we haven't touched on jewelry much. Nice thought.
The Pygmy music is very neat. I love watching the kids dance!
The Pygmy music is so fun to watch. I love that everyone has their place whether they are dancing or not. Some, like that small boy in the light blue shirt, are very energetic. Others simply bounce along while standing in place. There doesn't have to be an order or a choreographed movement. How refreshing!
ReplyDeleteI really like the pygmy dance and song, it was very educational and entertaining. Thanks!! have a good break~
